Professional Journey

Todd has been with Consentia for just over a year and a half, stepping into a pivotal leadership role overseeing one of the organization’s major contracts. With an extensive background in operations management, Todd brought a wealth of experience to Consentia, having worked across different industries, including controlled substances and oil and gas. His expertise lies in streamlining processes, improving team culture, and enhancing organizational efficiency skills that have proven invaluable in his current role.

Unlike many who seek out a specific industry, Todd’s journey to Consentia was driven by the opportunity to lead and solve operational challenges. “I was asked to step into this position, and it was exactly what I’ve done for years—managing people and processes,” he says. His ability to adapt quickly and immerse himself in Consentia’s unique work environment has helped foster a collaborative, efficient, and positive workplace.

When Todd first joined, he faced a learning curve familiarizing himself with new processes, procedures, and equipment. “The team here has been through multiple transitions over the years, but many members have been around for decades. I had to learn their strengths, build trust, and establish our culture as a cohesive unit,” he says. Under his leadership, despite the complexities involved, Todd helped to transform morale and productivity within his team.

Todd credits part of his success to his relationship with the Director of Operations, a long-time leader at Consentia. “She has been instrumental. Her expertise, especially when it comes to communicating with clients and stakeholders, has been invaluable. She’s the first person I turn to when I need advice or a second opinion,” he says.

Evolving and Driving Results

As the needs of the contract change, Todd’s role does too. From managing teams at various sites to making sure client expectations are met, no two days are the same. “I come to work knowing that every day will be different,” he describes. “There’s always a new challenge or a problem to solve, and that keeps things exciting within my work.”

One of Todd’s proudest achievements includes a significant document backlog that his team inherited. Through persistence, teamwork and dedication, they not only tackled the backlog but also introduced better systems to prevent future issues. “When we first started, there were 11,000 missing documents. With a lot of collaboration and problem-solving, we reduced that number to just 33. It was a huge milestone for us,” Todd recalls.

Another standout moment was when the Consentia team processed one million documents in a single month. “August 2023 was a significant achievement. We had a banner made to celebrate it, and when the team saw that, it was a reminder of just how hard they worked,” Todd shared. These milestones speak not only to Consentia’s operational excellence but also to the team’s dedication and ability to rally together during demanding times.

Leadership and Motivation

Todd’s leadership philosophy is centred around people. Success for him is when his team feels valued, engaged, and supported. “Without the team, we don’t have a business,” he says. Todd takes pride in creating an environment where people are encouraged to leave work at work and go home feeling fulfilled. “It’s important to me that no one takes stress home. If you’ve had a tough day, be proud you made it through. Tomorrow is a new day.”

One of the biggest challenges Todd faces in his role is navigating change. “Change in operations is constant, and not everyone is comfortable with it at first,” he explains. “The key is patience. You have to be able to communicate effectively, involve the team in the process, and help them understand how these changes make us better. That takes time and trust.”

Todd’s calm demeanour is a defining trait that keeps him grounded, even in high-pressure situations. “People ask how I stay so calm. The truth is, getting stressed doesn’t solve anything. I focus on what’s important, and I keep pushing forward,” Todd shares.

The Consentia Community

The workplace culture at Consentia is something Todd truly appreciates. Whether it’s annual pizza parties, holiday raffles, or team potlucks the goal is to bring team members together, Todd believes these little gestures go a long way in building morale. “At Consentia, there’s a genuine effort to show appreciation. It’s not about one big event it’s the small things we do throughout the year that bring people together,” Todd says. “Those moments matter, and they help people connect across teams.”

He also noted his appreciation for the diversity within the company, highlighting how team potlucks often include dishes from different cultures. “It’s incredible. You’re introduced to aromas and flavours you’ve never experienced before. It brings people together in such a unique way.”

Beyond the Workplace

When he’s not managing teams and solving challenges at Consentia, Todd loves to travel. “I try to get away every chance I can whether it’s Mexico, Vegas, or a cruise” he shares.

Todd also has an impressive background in hockey, having played at elite levels and even receiving invitations to some of the most prestigious programs such as Yale University and Princeton. “I had opportunities to play in the Western League and travel to Europe for tournaments. It was an amazing experience that I am very grateful for,” he recalls. Todd went on to coach and scout for over a decade before fully transitioning into operations.

Advice for Future Leaders

To those who are considering a career in operations, Todd offers this advice: “Be patient. People learn in different ways, and you can’t expect everyone to adapt to your style overnight. Guide them, communicate openly, and always keep your emotions under control.” He emphasizes the importance of supporting your team as a leader. “If your team is happy and engaged, the results will follow.”

For Todd, Consentia is a very special place to work. “This is the most niche industry I’ve ever been part of, but it’s fantastic,” he says. “The leadership here is supportive, the teams are incredible, and the work we do makes a real difference.”

Under Todd’s leadership and commitment to cultivating a strong team culture, it’s evident he’s doing more than just managing operations. He’s creating a positive, empowering environment where individuals feel valued, motivated, and inspired to deliver their best work.
